Introduction
MovieReading is an app that allows you to listen to audio descriptions or read subtitles of movies on your smartphone or smart device, even in theaters without accessibility equipment. No special seating or hardware is needed; just your smart device and headphones for audio description.
To get started with MovieReading, follow these three steps:
-
Download the desired audio description or subtitle file: Before going to the movie theater, visit the Market tab in the app and browse available titles. Select the movie you’re going to watch and choose either Audio Description or Subtitles. The file will be downloaded into the My Movies section of the app, usually within seconds.
-
Prepare your device: Once you’re in the theater, switch your phone to Airplane Mode. To avoid disruptions and disturbance to others, remember to disable your ringer and activate Airplane Mode before the movie starts.
-
Enjoy the audio description or subtitles: In the My Movies tab, select the movie you downloaded and press OK when prompted. The audio description or subtitles will sync with the movie and start automatically. If listening to audio description, your screen will go dark after a few seconds to avoid disturbing fellow moviegoers.
While using MovieReading for audio description or subtitles, you can perform the following actions:
- Sync: Resynchronize the audio description or subtitles with the movie by touching this option.
- Pause: Pause the audio description or subtitles.
- Resume: Unpause the audio description or subtitles. The app will automatically resynchronize.
- Back: Return to the My Movies section.
When reading subtitles, tap the screen once to access the option menu with all available actions. These options are always accessible when using VoiceOver or listening to audio description.
Below is a brief description of each tab in the main menu.
Market
In the MovieReading app, the Market tab allows you to download audio descriptions and subtitles for movies currently in theaters. The downloaded files will be added to the My Movies list.
To download audio descriptions or subtitles, select the desired movie (along with the subtitle language if applicable). The download may take a few seconds to up to ten minutes, depending on network capacity.
My Movies
In the My Movies tab, you can find all the audio description and subtitle files you have downloaded from the Market. When in a movie theater, choose the movie you’re about to watch (and the desired subtitle language if applicable). You will receive a reminder to enable Airplane Mode on your device. Once the movie starts, press OK. The audio description or subtitles will generally sync within a few seconds, but occasionally it may take longer. You can always resynchronize from the MovieReading options menu.
Settings
In the Settings tab, you will find additional options and information about the MovieReading application, including the following:
- Country: Make sure you have selected the correct country based on your location.
